Jaguar X Type

The Jaguar X Type is in the class of cars called the compact executive. It started production in early 2001, and remains the smallest vehicle offered by Jaguar. The Jaguar X Type was one of the only four-door compact cars that was ever manufactured by Jaguar. The X Type was designed to target mid market buyers of German brands specifically the BMW 3 Series, the Mercedes C Class and the Audi A4. The objective was to sell around 100,000 per year and expand Jaguar’s world wide market

Jaguar X Type

The Jaguar X Type was loosely based on a ford platform, containing about 15-20% of the original design. It was offered in 4 transmission types: 5 speed auto, 5 speed manual, 6 speed auto, and 6 speed manual. These were all mated to different assortments of engines. The higher performance trim levels offered more gearbox options. It is alleged that the design was presented as a “fait accompli” by Detroit to Jaguar’s UK design team. This unhappy partnership may have resulted in its ultimate demise.

In 2003 The Jaguar X Type was offered in a front wheel drive variant that went along with the introduction of Jaguar’s first ever four cylinder diesel engines

2004 saw the introduction of the second ever Jaguar X Type estate car, known throughout North America as the “sportwagon”. In the same year the limited edition Spirit model was released featuring a 2.5L V6 engine with a “Sports Collection pack

Even though the reception was rather large the sales just couldn’t stack up to BMW, Audi, and Mercedes Benz.  In 2005 the 3 rival German models sold over 200,000 units in USA against the Jaguar X Type sales of just over 10,000 units. Ultimately the run ended in 2009 when Jaguar decided to shut down its X-Type operation. It never got anywhere near its target of 100,000 cars per year peaking at 50,000 in 2003. All in all the car definitely made its mark on the market. Winning awards, turning heads, and giving Jaguar a new perspective on their owners.

Your Questions About Jaguar X Type Problems

Linda asks…

2002 Jaguar X- Type problems?

I recently purchased a 2002 Jag X- Type 2.5, and since day 1 it has been giving me problems. A day after I bought the car it died on me twice while driving; in traffic on top of that! Well I take it back to the dealership and they have it diagnosed and tell me it’s the throttle body that needs to be replaced. So they replace it and i’m thinking that’s that. A couple days later the check engine light comes on and it doesn’t want to rev past 3000 rpm? I have it diagnosed and they tell me it’s a PO code 171 or system too lean? What in the world is that, the mechanic told me it could be Various things, air fuel mixture too low, a leak in hose, ETC? There’s more! My steering wheel makes a weird noise when I turn it… sometimes. The steering effort seems a bit hard and my tyranny makes a clicking sound sometimes when I stop and go? I am so confused as to what all this nonsense means. I think I bought a lemon=( Any suggestions or ideas anyone? Any insight will help, THANKS.

Doug answers:

If the lean fuel indicator come out after the throttle body being changed, then it’s the problem. The flap on the throttle body is adjustable, the problem might the adjutment is too open, such as adjustment for a hot region with a rare oxygen structure in the air. The fuel is injected by the calculation of flap position and gear, if the flap is opener then your region setting, the fuel will always too lean. It’s impossible to say a leak in hose, what a dealer is that? In injection system, the engine will shut down automaticly if there is a leak in the air system by error ECU reading cause by different value of passing air at the filter and throttle body. If the leak is on fuel system, you will smell the fuel. To weird steering, please check the tie rod and tie rod end by lift the car and hear a metal contact sound when you shake the wheel horizontally. Or it might the power steering hose has contact with the Jaguar body, even a low fluid can make the sound. Just do a filters change followed by the fluid.

jaguar x-type gearbox problems?

I have a jaguar x-type 3.0 it has done 28,000 miles it’s had 3 clutches and 2 gearboxes, talk about a problem car I wish I had written it off, rather than chuck money down the drain running an unreliable pile of crap.

Doug answers:

Billy Bob 3 clutches 2 gear boxs points to pilot error in 28,000 miles.

2002 Jaguar x type fuel problems?

My car ran out of gas, it sat a couple of months before i put gas in it. When i tried to start it after i put gas it tries to crank but wont hit. If i spray starter fluid directly in to it it will turn over. It’s not the fuel pump switch. I went over all possibilities. It started perfectly and ran great before it ran out of gas.

Doug answers:

A couple of things to consider:

When you ran out of gas it’s quite possible that some debris got sucked into your fuel line and may have clogged the fuel filter.

The problem could also be that the fuel rail on top of the engine needs to be bled to get all the air out of the fuel line so it can travel into the injectors.

There will be a schraeder valve (Looks like a bicycle tire valve) on the fuel rail. Just depress the valve stem and the air should bleed out of the line.

You may need to crank the engine over before doing this to repressurize the fuel rail.

Helen asks…

What kind of problems would a 2003 JAGUAR X-TYPE 2.5 might have?

I’ve been looking for a car and found this jaguar and j would like to know what kind of problems it would have? And it has about 220,000 mileage.

Doug answers:

Lots. X-Types’s were built in Liverpool UK at the old Ford Cortina assembly line. The 2.5L engine was and is far better than the more popular 2.0L but 220k miles are high enough for a Jaguar, allow to say for any Jaguar. This engine is rather smooth and reliable i would say up to 150k miles but again the electrical system of the car is to blamed for lots of problems associated with the engine.
Also, the interior tends to wear faster than the average today’s car.
It is a well built car however but it cannot stand the test of time.

Michael asks…

Cost of repair 2002 Jaguar X type – problem with differential?

Not particularly mechanical but Tuffy Muffler says there is problem with differential and possibly wheel bearings. Right front wheel (all wheel drive) doesn’t rotate. Tuffy said I must take car to transmission shop or dealer. Got new transmission just 1 1/2 years ago. Any ideas as to possible problem and costs of repair?

Doug answers:

Always get a second opinion. The dealership will do that for you, hopefully. Also, expensive cars mean expensive repairs. Jag’s notoriously have drive train issues. Its because jaguar thinks that ever part of the car needs to be computer controlled, and when the computer goofs and sends it from 4th to 2nd gear for no good reason, everything goes grinding to a hault. If you want a nice car, buy a fully loaded lower model car. Chrysler, BMW, and even Ford are making good quality cars these days.

Your Questions About Jaguar X Type Problems 2002

Daniel asks…

i’m thinking about getting a 2002 Jaguar X-type 2.5 liter. 49000 miles. for 8000. Good deal?

Also, what are the pros and cons of this car? The price isnt bad at all, and i know jags are good cars. But is it expensive to maintain, are they known to have any problems? Do they have good gas mileage?

Doug answers:

It may be a good deal. If it has an automatic transmission, don’t buy it. They’re known for problems. The five-speed manual makes for an enjoyable driving experience.

Other than that, I would stay away from a car with no maintenance history. The brakes on that car are very expensive and caliper problems are not unknown to them. They’re known for intake issues (bad seals, etc. Causing a check engine light), and they need a major service every 30,000 miles.

I would take it to a shop that’s familiar with X-Types and have them look it over. Also, you can take the VIN to your local dealer and see what maintenance was done on it while it was in warranty.

But honestly, I think the same year XJ8 is a much better car.

C7S, the X-Type NEVER came in a v8. They were offered in a 2.5 liter and 3.0 liter v6 engine ONLY. They are not heavy cars like the XJ8′s, which means they get decent fuel economy, in the mid-20′s.

Unlike the rest of the people on this forum, I know these cars. Feel free to e-mail me with any more questions. I can probably answer them for you.

William asks…

i have a 2002 jaguar x type that ive paid over 20k already… i still owe 7900.00 on it.?

I now have a kid on the way… im not driving it right now due to problems with it. should i let it go and take the blow on my credit or try and pay it off asap? its expensive to keep right now…. need opinions please

Doug answers:

Maybe try to sell it if you have other transportation. I wouldn’t take the hit on the credit if you have a child on the way. You may really need the credit at some point.

Take it back, and demand that they scan it with an OBD II scanner. Better yet, get it scanned at AutoZone, and get the code(s), then take it back and demand that they fix it. If not, then ask for your money back.
